BDIX - the Bangladesh Internet Exchange - is the meeting point where Bangladeshi internet providers connect to each other and exchange local traffic directly, instead of sending it around the world and back. If you have ever downloaded from a "BDIX FTP server" at full line speed or watched live TV over BDIX without it counting against your data, this is the piece of infrastructure that makes it possible.
This guide explains what BDIX actually is, how peering works, why it makes your connection faster, and how to tell whether your ISP is really giving you BDIX access.
The Short Answer: What Is BDIX?
BDIX is Bangladesh's first and main Internet Exchange Point (IXP). An IXP is a physical facility - switches, routers and fiber in a data centre - where many networks plug in so their traffic can be handed over locally. When two networks "peer" at an exchange, they send traffic directly to each other across that fabric.
BDIX was established in 2004 and operates as a not-for-profit, open and neutral exchange run in the interest of its member networks. Over the years, well over a hundred Bangladeshi networks - from the largest nationwide ISPs to small local operators, mobile operators and content hosts - have connected to it. For a user, the practical meaning is simple: if your ISP peers with BDIX, Bangladeshi destinations are one local hop away.
What Happens Without BDIX?
To see why the exchange matters, picture what a request does when there is no local peering.
The long way round
You open a website hosted in Dhaka, but your ISP and the site's host have no direct connection. Your request travels from your ISP's network to an international gateway, crosses a submarine cable to Singapore or Mumbai, hops through a foreign backbone, and comes back to Bangladesh. Every kilometre adds milliseconds; every congested segment can add buffering, packet loss and slowdowns at peak hours. You also consume international bandwidth - which is one of the most expensive resources a Bangladeshi ISP buys.
The BDIX way
With peering, your request crosses your ISP's link into the exchange fabric and comes out at the destination network - both physically in Dhaka. The round trip is a few milliseconds, the capacity is local and plentiful, and no international bandwidth is used at all. This is why a BDIX FTP server can feel faster than a much closer international site.
Why BDIX Servers Use Private IP Addresses
BDIX media servers live inside ISP and exchange networks, on private address ranges - 10.x.x.x, 172.16–31.x.x, 192.168.x.x and the carrier-grade 100.64–127.x.x range. Addresses like 10.16.100.244 (ICC FTP) or 15.1.1.1 (Circle FTP) are not reachable from the global internet, and that is by design:
- Local by definition. A private address only means something inside networks that know the route - in practice, ISPs that peer with BDIX.
- Free to carry. Because the traffic never transits a paid international link, ISPs carry it without charging you international bandwidth.
- Content stays local. The movie, TV and software servers the Bangladeshi internet is famous for are hosted on these addresses.
The trade-off: reachability depends on who your ISP is. The same address works perfectly on one connection and times out on another, which is the single most common "BDIX server not working" complaint. What BDIX Means for Speed and Data
Speed
On a BDIX route, your limit is your own package, not the route. A 20 Mbps connection can generally pull 20 Mbps from a well-run BDIX server, with ping of roughly 1–10 ms inside Dhaka. International sites, by contrast, share everyone's international capacity, so evening slowdowns are normal.
Data allowance
Many ISPs treat BDIX traffic as local bandwidth: it does not reduce your international quota, and some "unlimited international" offers are really "unlimited local + capped international". Policies vary by ISP and package, so ask your provider how they meter BDIX traffic - but the technical fact underneath the policy is that BDIX traffic never crosses the expensive submarine cables.
Reliability
Because there is no international leg, BDIX services are largely immune to submarine cable faults - the events that routinely slow or break Bangladesh's access to the wider internet. When a cable is cut, BDIX servers, local CDNs and locally hosted services usually keep running at full speed.
BDIX vs IIX: What Is the Difference?
Bangladeshi ISP pages often advertise "BDIX + IIX", and the terms get mixed up. They are related but not the same:

Rule of thumb: BDIX = inside Bangladesh. Anything described as IIX crosses a border. If an ISP advertises "BDIX included", that is the tier where local FTP servers and live TV live.
Who Runs BDIX?
BDIX is operated as a not-for-profit, open and neutral exchange - its stated purpose is to keep Bangladeshi traffic in Bangladesh, and its policies apply equally to members. It is not owned by any single ISP, which is what makes peering there trustworthy: a small district ISP and the largest mobile operator meet on the same fabric under the same rules. The exchange has grown alongside Bangladesh's ISP industry and today underpins much of the country's domestic internet economy, from FTP media servers to locally cached video and gaming.
For operators, BDIX publishes peering policy and member information on its official site (bdix.net). For everyone else, the visible outcome is the one this guide describes: local traffic that is fast, cheap to carry, and resilient to international outages.
How to Tell Whether You Have BDIX Access
- Open a known BDIX server in your browser. Try any address from our BDIX server directory. If a welcome page or file listing loads, you are on a peering ISP.
